Arctic Fritillary
Boloria chariclea
Observation date: July 31, 2024
Submitted by: Cascade Colors
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Lots of these flying around; not sure if they're all the same species but if not I can resubmit some. Please note in previous years I've gone to this location and submissions were rejected due to incorrect county....all I can do is select on the map roughly where I am (and per the map, my location is accurate); it's on the Milner pass trail coming up from the W side of of RMNP (trailhead begins at Milner Pass trailhead / Poudre Lake right on Hwy 34), before reaching the Alpine Visitor's Center at the very top. At this location it very well may be the west side of the divide.

Coordinator notes: Arctic Fritillary...a male...the most common lesser fritillary in mid-summer. The other ones fly earlier although above timberline you can find Frejia and eunomia in willow bogs between 11,000 and 12,000 feet. And by the way Lynn...thanks for confirming the location where you found the dotted alpine from Garfield county above Stillwater Resvr. I think that is the only from there in at least 50 years. It was reported from the Flattops in Garfield County several years ago but I think it was in a drainage to the south above Glenwood Springs. Mike
